7 Horror Movies I Recommend You Watch

Netflix, Universal, Radius-TWC, IFC Midnight

I’m a picky viewer. I like to watch interesting movies, but unfortunately, few films can really grab my attention. Sometimes I spend a long time choosing what to watch, start something, get bored, and then, disappointed, I turn it off. Horror movies, for me, are that genre that usually rivets my attention from the first minutes and doesn’t let go until the end credits. Of course, even within this genre, I don’t like everything by a long shot. Often, I can tell if a movie is good or not just by watching the trailer. Sometimes it’s enough to read the description and check the rating on IMDb (at the same time, a low rating doesn’t always mean I won’t like the movie, just as a high rating isn’t a guarantee of a captivating viewing experience).

Horror movies, like other genres, have their fair share of clichés. It feels like there are at least a hundred stories like "a family moves into a new house where some evil force resides." Well, since they keep making them, I guess people watch them. Although, I’m a little tired of that. Personally, I’m more interested in some non-standard plots. Something that grabs you with its idea, its presentation, something very atmospheric and intriguing.

So, here’s what I’ll recommend you watch if you haven’t seen it yet:

1. It Follows, 2014, 6.8 on IMDb

Plot:
"A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter."

This movie is over 10 years old. I watched it, honestly, not that long ago. It often popped up in various horror compilations, but the opinions in the comments were all over the place, so I didn’t rush to watch it. The concept is interesting. Something, someone, slowly pursuing the main character is captivating and mesmerizing. What will the main characters come up with? How will it all end?

2. The Autopsy of Jane Doe, 2016, 6.8 on IMDb

Plot:
"Father and son coroners investigate the death of a beautiful Jane Doe."

I don’t even know what to say about this movie from my own perspective. It was just interesting to watch—what the heck is going on here and how will it all end? Oh, and yes, the actress played her role perfectly.

3. The Platform, 2019, 7.0 on IMDb

Plot:
"In a prison where inmates are fed on a descending platform, those on the upper levels take more than their fair share while those below are left to starve on scraps and one man decides to change the system."

This movie is quite harsh in places; it probably won’t be to everyone’s taste. When I watched it for the first time, the development of events and what floor the main character would wake up on next was really, really interesting. Not everyone liked the ending, but personally, I wasn’t disappointed. After all, the movie is a kind of adult fairy tale with its own metaphors.

4. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, 2018, 6.5 on IMDb

Plot:
"The crew of a horror web series travels to an abandoned asylum for a live broadcast. It soon encounters much more than expected as it moves deeper inside the nightmarish old building."

The first half is a bit drawn out, in my opinion. But the second half… I couldn’t tear myself away, and at the same time, it was creepy and scary to watch. Koreans definitely have their own style in cinema… Honestly, I don’t remember the plot details or how it all ended. But I do remember taking one earbud out while watching it alone in the evening and periodically pausing to catch my breath 😅

5. Smile, 2022, 6.5 on IMDb

Plot:
"After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced she is being threatened by an uncanny entity."

I mentioned this movie in my previous review. I’ll repeat myself: half a minute of the trailer was enough for me to know I wanted to watch it. The acting, the visuals, and the mesmerizing sound effects. Oh, and the plot. And that crazy smile on the poster is something else…

6. Bird Box, 2018, 6.6 on IMDb

Plot:
"Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety."

The atmosphere is simply mesmerizing. What is it that they all see in the sky? By the way, the movie got a sequel that wasn’t rated too well. But I liked both parts.

7. The Visit, 2015, 6.3 on IMDb

Plot:
"Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents’ disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation."

I won’t say this is the most interesting or scariest movie I’ve ever seen. I would recommend watching it just for one moment about halfway through that made me go, "No waaaaaay, no freaking way!" Overall, I like it when you’re watching and you realize something’s not right, but what is it?

And as a bonus, I’ll recommend a movie that left me with mixed feelings. But it’s not a horror movie in the classic sense, but rather a "psychological horror with elements of surrealism":

I’m Thinking of Ending Things, 2020, 6.5 on IMDb

Plot:
"Full of misgivings, a young woman travels with her new boyfriend to his parents’ secluded farm. Upon arriving, she comes to question everything she thought she knew about him, and herself."

"As the story unfolds, everything becomes increasingly strange and disturbing, with distortions of reality, time, and identity."

This movie is very unusual, in a "what the heck is going on here?" kind of way. It has its own unique atmosphere. While watching it, I couldn’t predict at all where it would lead and what it was all about in the end. At the same time, I couldn’t tear myself away from watching. When I finished it, I still didn’t understand anything (but it wasn’t disappointing). Not until I came across a movie review explaining what happened. I think it’s helpful to know this before watching the movie because it’s in the original book but not revealed in the film adaptation (or not revealed very obviously). Without going into details, everything happening on screen are the memories of a man somewhere near the end of his life. Memories (sometimes attempts to remember), analysis, sometimes making things up, sometimes regrets, sometimes "what if…" thoughts.

That’s all for now. I hope you haven’t seen some of these yet and that you’ll enjoy them.
