Murderbot: A Cyborg Sociophobe Against the World

The main character is SecUnit (or just Murderbot, if you’re into living on the edge of familiarity), who is, essentially, the ideal security unit: ruthless, efficient, and…dead tired of human nonsense. His dream? To disconnect from everyone, crash on the couch (okay, maybe that’s more me talking) and binge-watch serials. But no, he has to save people, deal with their dramas, and pretend he gives a damn.

This particular SecUnit isn’t exactly ordinary. He hacked his own governor module, gaining free will (and a whole lot of headaches to go with it). Now he secretly calls himself Murderbot—a hint at some dark past, the details of which aren’t even particularly clear to him.

But freedom is a tricky thing. Instead of peacefully watching space soap operas (his guilty pleasure), he’s forced to pretend to be a "normal" drone so they don’t tear him down for spare parts. And on top of that—protect a group of scientists who seem to go out of their way to get into trouble.

What Caught My Eye

Casting. The role of Murderbot went to an actor who can convey sarcasm with just a look. And yeah, it’s not entirely CGI—part of the facial expressions and movements are played by a real person, and then the graphics are layered on. The result is eerily convincing.

Humor. In the books (which the series is based on), it’s as dry as Agent Cooper’s martini, and the show keeps that. The dialogues are full of biting remarks in the vein of, "Yeah, I saved you, but only because otherwise I’d have to listen to your screaming."

Visuals. All these space stations, spacesuits, and shootouts look like they were made by people who actually read sci-fi, not just Googled "what does futurism look like."

As for My Not Always Humble Opinion

I was glued to the trailers. And it wasn’t just me—critics are already whispering that Murderbot could outshine The Expanse in terms of "oh-my-god-this-is-so-cool" level.

What grabs you? First off, the main character is a rare case where the cynicism doesn’t irritate, but actually makes you feel for him. Second, the balance between action and psychology: they don’t drown you in endless shootouts, but they also don’t get bogged down in endless monologues about the meaning of life.

And of course, the theme of "a robot who hates his job"—that’s all of us, right? Right? Especially on Monday mornings.

If you love science fiction with brains, sarcasm, and no pretension—I think you’ll like it. If not… Well, let’s watch the first 2 episodes that Apple+ is dropping on May 16th. Maybe Murderbot will become your new favorite AI?

And seriously, don’t even bring up Robocop. I remember.
