We Were Liars: The Rich Cry Too (But They Do It on a Private Island)
Prime Video

Well, folks, Prime Video has finally given us a reason to cancel all our plans for June 18th. That’s when We Were Liars drops, a series that promises to blow your mind so elegantly you’ll probably thank it. All eight episodes are coming out at once—no more of that exquisite torture of waiting a week for a new episode. You can binge-watch, grab some popcorn (or a glass of wine, since the characters are from a very wealthy family), and immerse yourself in an atmosphere of riches, secrets, and outright family dysfunction.

What’s It All About?

Imagine this: You’re 17-year-old Cadence Sinclair (Emily Alyn Lind), you have your own island (well, not yours, but your super-rich family’s, but who’s counting?), a ton of skeletons in the closet (possibly even literally), and memory gaps after some terrible incident. You return to where it all happened, but your relatives and friends pretend nothing out of the ordinary occurred. And those who do know—the "Liars" (yes, that’s what they call themselves, and no, it’s not ironic)—are as silent as clams.

In short: "Are you hiding something?" — "No." — "Now?" — "Still no." — "Okay, fine…" (Spoiler: It’s not fine).

Who’s Behind This?

E. Lockhart’s bestselling novel was adapted by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie—the same minds that gave us The Vampire Diaries and Roswell. So if you’re expecting beautiful people, emotional rollercoasters, and a dash of mysticism, it seems you’re in good hands. Just don’t demand too much logic, because, judging by the book, things are going to be a little (read: very) convoluted here.

Why It Might Be Awesome

The rich are people too (but they act like characters in a psychological thriller). Do you love watching beautiful homes, impeccable outfits, and families that seem perfect on the outside but are a complete nervous wreck on the inside? Then welcome.

Mystery. Amnesia is always a surefire hit. Especially when everyone around you knows the truth but stubbornly pretends they’ve forgotten how to speak English.

The "Liars." No, it’s not an insult; it’s the name of their close-knit group. And yes, they clearly did something. But what exactly it was—you’ll have to figure out along with Cadence.

What Might Not Work for You

If you can’t stand it when characters "don’t say everything" (and they will be very actively not saying everything), then you might occasionally want to shove their faces into the screen. But, honestly, it’s essential—otherwise, what’s the point of a mystery?

The Verdict

We Were Liars looks like the perfect summer series: sun, sea, rich teenagers, family secrets, and a dash (okay, a handful) of drama. If you enjoy stories where every other character looks suspicious and you have to dig out the truth like a splinter, this is for you.

And if not… Well, you can always just enjoy the beautiful scenery and imagine you have an island too. There’s no harm in dreaming.
